What is turron?

Turrón (Nougat) is a traditional Spanish dessert, a combination of honey and almonds with a history of over a thousand years, beginning with the Moors in southern Spain. Today, it is one of the favorite sweets all over Spain, being a traditional gift at Christmas celebrations.

Buy spanish turrón

Buying Spanish nougat online nowadays is very easy. At Colono you will find top quality turron. They are made with a high proportion of marcona almonds and rosemary honey and a lower sugar content than other nougats. One of the ways to know if we are in front of a quality nougat is that it has a high proportion of almonds, so we will be sure to consume a very nutritious product with an exceptional flavour.

Soft nougat or Jijona nougat

Soft nougat, also known as Jijona nougat or Xixona nougat, in honour of the town where it was first produced and where it is still produced today, is one of the most famous nougats and one of the Christmas desserts par excellence. Soft nougat is made with ground almonds, honey and egg white. The great secret of its flavour is the marcona almond, a small round almond, very expensive to produce, which contains a lot of oil, and provides the creamy texture to this excellent nougat.

Almond nougat or Alicante nougat

Alicante nougat is the other king of Spanish nougat. It is made with lightly roasted almonds and honey. It originates from the province of Alicante, south of Valencia. It is so popular in Spain that during the Christmas season you will find this turrón in most homes. It is typically presented on a tray along with other Christmas sweets such as turrón de Jijona, marzipan and polvorones.

Other varieties of nougat in Spain

There are other varieties of Spanish nougat that are also widely consumed during the Christmas season. One of the favourites among Spaniards is the turrón de yema tostada, a nougat not so well known outside Spain, which is made mainly with almonds and egg yolk, and then a layer of burnt sugar is added, reminiscent of Catalan custard. Other varieties of turrón that are highly valued are those that mix almonds and chocolate in different proportions.
